国際交流に関するエッセイコンテストは、同志社国際主義教育委員会が国際交流プログラムの一環として、国際交流に関するエッセイを同志社各学校の学生・生徒から募り、国際交流や国際問題に関する考えを発表する機会として実施している。

　第27回目となる今年度のテーマは、「『グローバリゼーションと幸福』 “Globalization and Happiness”」 であり、日本語部門12点（大学生の部2点、高校生の部5点、中学生の部5点）、英語部門22点（大学生の部3点、高校生の部9点、中学生の部10点）の作品応募があった。審査委員会の厳正な審査により受賞者を決定し、日本語部門、英語部門それぞれの最優秀作、優秀作、佳作の受賞者に対して、表彰状及び副賞が授与された。なお、今年度については、新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大防止のため、一堂に会しての表彰式は中止し、各学校での授与となった。
　なお、日本語部門について新 茂之審査委員から、英語部門について山田 Sean Thomas審査委員からそれぞれ以下のとおり講評があった。

（日本語部門）
　今年度のテーマは、「グローバリゼーションと幸福」でした。いまもなおコロナ禍の終息を見通せず、日本では新型コロナウイルス感染の拡大が続いています。コロナ禍は、物理的にも精神的にもわたくしたちの生活を大きく制限してきました。しかしながら、このような中にあっても、時間は、容赦なく過ぎていきます。これは、さまざまな活動の再開が苦境の中にいるわたくしたちに迫っていることを意味しています。たとえ苦しい状況にあっても、わたくしたちは、将来に向かって生きていかなければなりません。だから、わたくしたちにとってほんとうに必要であるのは、希望ではないでしょうか。好んで不幸せになろうとする人は、いないはずです。わたくしたちは、幸福を希求しています。他方、通信の技術の飛躍的な進歩によって、グローバル化は、いろいろな分野で否応なく進んでいます。グローバリ ゼーションと幸福、わたくしたちは、これら二つをどのように考えればよいのでしょうか。今回のエッセイコンテストではそれをみなさんに問いました。
　優秀作を受賞した作品は、その結論で、「人間は森羅万象と関係を結びながら生きて」おり、「学問や芸術を通じて、それらを解きほぐし、その内在する美に目を向けることが私たちを人間たらしめる」と述べています。グローバル化がどのように進展しようとも、わたくしたちは、有機体として環境との相互的作用の中でしか生きられません。この作品は、そうした環境の中でも自然に着目して、自然がわたくしたちに見せてくれている美を繊細に捉えられる感受性の共有に人間の幸福のあり方を見出そうとしています。自然的環境の保護と維持が喫緊の課題になっています。それを勘案すれば、本作品は、重要な視点を提言しています。
　佳作の作品も、現代のグローバリゼーションを見据えて、たいへん力強い主張を明らかにしています。グローバリゼーションは、わたくしたちの生活の利便性を飛躍的に向上させました。しかしながら、その一方で、グローバリゼーションは、幸福の画一化を招いてしまっています。それは、幸福のさまざまなあり方を失わせてきました。わたくしたちは、グローバリゼーションの動きを見据えながらも、立ち止まってそれぞれの生き方を見つめ直すべきではないでしょうか。その一方で、別の作品は、こうも述べています。すなわち、「時間の流れが止まることがなく、厳しい冬が過ぎた後、春は必ず訪れる」と。グローバリゼーションの招来した難題が世界規模でわたくしたちを待ち受けています。それらの解決に向けて、手と手を取り合い支え合って、一歩でも前に進んで、春を待ち望みたいと思います。
　新型コロナウイルス感染の拡大がまだまだ続いてはいますけれども、上述のように、わたくしたちは、経済的にも政治的にも国際交流を停止できません。創立者新島襄は、国禁を犯して渡米し、その中でキリスト教主義を徳育の基本とする学校を構想して、それを実現させました。同志社は、新島のそのような志を継いで国際主義を教育の柱の一つとして掲げてきました。国際交流は、同志社に集うみなさんの成長の糧になっています。将来を担うみなさんには、ぜひとも、国際交流の今後を、同志社での学びを通じて、展望してほしい、と切に願っております。

（英語部門）
Thank you for your participation in the 27th Essay Contest on International Exchange addressing the theme: Globalization and Happiness. This year's essay contest was a success thanks to your effort. The Essay Contest Committee would like to congratulate all the participants for submitting thoughtful and creative essays that demonstrated a deep understanding of how globalization and happiness are related. Your participation has contributed to a better understanding of the impact globalization has on our world and how it relates to our collective happiness. Participants this year shared a variety of ideas ranging from exposing the truth behind a globalized world to bringing happiness to the world. Your writing showed you were excited to learn more about the theme and able to immerse yourselves in the investigation of globalization and happiness. The topics of your essays captured the readers’ attention while compelling them to consider positive changes in order to increase global happiness and personal well-being.
The committee would like to offer some feedback aimed at improving participants' writing skills so they may be better prepared for future essays. Of greatest importance, the committee would like to encourage you to provide cited quotations, summaries, or descriptions in your essays. Through the incorporation of these resources, you will engage readers and show them that you conducted research and have become an expert on the theme. In addition to the above, be sure to comment on your evidence. Explaining how your evidence supports your claim or adds substance to your essay strengthens your message.
Of equal importance, the committee would like to stress the need for preparation and revision. Participants in essay contests, and good writers in general, must revise their work. The essays awarded prizes had clearly been thoughtfully prepared and are well-polished works. The committee encourages participants to incorporate the writing process: brainstorm, outline, research, write, read, review, revise and rewrite. Be sure to ask a peer or mentor to review your work and give you feedback. After receiving feedback, spend some time reflecting on and revising your work. Especially when writing about a difficult theme, writers should follow the writing process to help them prepare and to identify strengths and weaknesses in their work.
Finally, please make sure you follow the format requirements as outlined in the application. Your essay may be wonderfully written but if it fails to meet the formatting requirements it may be difficult to read or dismissed by the committee.
In closing, this year’s committee was extremely impressed with the quality and depth of the essays submitted. We encourage all participants to take advantage of future opportunities for similar contests. We also hope the contest provided the participants with an opportunity to learn more about and reflect on happiness on a global scale.
