新島旧邸について About NEESIMA’S RESIDENCE 明治末期の旧邸 Neesima’s Residence in 19th century1890年代前半の書斎 Neesima’s Study in the 1890’s 結婚間もないころの新島襄と八重夫人 Joseph Hardy Neesima and his wife Yae この敷地には、幕末まで禁裡幕府の御用大工棟梁中井家の屋敷があり､明治初年中井屋敷を堂上華族高松保実が所有していました。1875(明治8)年11月29日、新島襄は､この高松邸の半分を賃借して、生徒8名で同志社英学校を開校しました。すなわち、ここが同志社発祥の地です。翌年、学校は旧薩摩藩邸に移りますが、その後、新島は高松邸を購入し、自宅を建築しました。これが、今の新島旧邸です。 Origin of the placentil the end of Edo Period (1600-1868) this site had been occupied by a Nakai, master carpenter of the Imperial Palace.Thereafter the place belonged to a court noble called Takamatsu Yasuzane. Neesima rented a half of Takamatsu's house, and on November 29, 1875 he opened Doshisha Eigakko (Doshisha Academy) with eight students. Thus,this is the birth-place of the Doshisha. In 1876 the school moved northward to the present Imadegawa campus. Later on Neesima bought Takamatsu's old site, and built this house.7たかまつ にいじまじょう やすざね —3—
