11月29日、高松保実邸を仮教室とし「官許同志社英学校」を開校、生徒8名。32歳。 November 29. Opened “Doshisha Eigakko” at the residence of Takamatsu Yasuzane with eight students. 1月3日、J.D.デイヴィス宅で山本覚馬の妹八重と結婚。32歳。 January 3. Married Yamamoto Yae, sister of Yamamoto Kakuma, at the residence of J.D. Davis. 9月7日、アメリカの友人、J.M.シアーズの寄付による私宅(現在の新島旧邸)が完成。35歳。 September 7. Neesima's Residence completed by the money given by J.M.Sears. 以後、新島はキリスト教伝道に励む一方で、同志社女学校の発展や同志社大学設立運動などに病躯をおして奔走した。 Since then, Neesima lived an extremely active life as teacher, educator, administrator of his school including girls' school, and also as evangelist, despite occasional illness. 1月23日、新島襄、大磯にて永眠｡46歳。 January 23. Died at 46 years old in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. 八重夫人、新島邸を同志社に寄付。以後永眠するまでここに住む。 Mrs. Neesima donated this residence to the Doshisha and lived here until her last days. 6月、八重夫人永眠。87歳。 June. Mrs. Neesima died at 87 years old. 調度･家具類とともに京都市有形文化財に指定される。 The Residence was designated as a tangible cultural property of Kyoto with all its furniture. 新島襄生誕150年記念事業の一環として、全面解体保存修理。 The Residence was completely reformed at the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Neesima's birth. 工事完了。以後、一般公開され現在に至る。 The reform completed.
