1月14日(新暦2月12日)、江戸の神田にあった、安中藩主板倉家の江戸屋敷で生誕。 January 14 (February 12 in the solar calendar), born in Kanda, Edo, where there was the Edo house of Annaka domain. 6月14日(新暦7月17日)、函館より脱国。21歳。 Left Japan illegally from Hakodate in Hokkaido. 7月21日、ボストン着｡22歳。 Arrived in the port of Boston on July 21. 10月、フィリップス・アカデミー(高等学校)に編入学。22歳。 October. Entered Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. 12月、アンドーヴァー神学校教会で洗礼を受け、キリスト教徒となる。23歳。 December. Baptized at the church in Andover Theological Seminary. 6月、フィリップス・アカデミーを修了。9月にアーモスト大学へ進学｡24歳。 June. Finished Phillips Academy: Entered Amherst College in September. 理学士の称号を得てアーモスト大学を卒業。27歳。 Graduated from Amherst College with B.S. (Bachelor of Science) 9月、アンドーヴァー神学校に入学。 September. Entered Andover Theological Seminary. 4月14日、アメリカン・ボード日本ミッションの準宣教師に任命される。 Apri1 14. Appointed by the American Board a corresponding missionary to go to Japan. 7月2日、アンドーヴァー神学校を卒業。31歳。 July 2. Graduated from Andover Theologica1 Seminary.10月31日、サン・フランシスコ出航。 October 31. Left the U.S. from San Francisco.11月26日、帰国(横浜上陸)。 November 26. Landed in Yokohama. 11月29日、安中で両親と10年ぶりに再会。 November 29.
