SeelConstructed by: Sahei KojimaAt the time of completionWhen Joseph Neesima passed away, the students who mourned his death started a fundraisingcampaign for the construction of a divinity house to commemorate their founder. Atthe same time, B.W. Clarke and his wife donated $10,000 through the American Board, requestingDoshisha to complete a building named in honor of their son (Byron Stone-Clarke), who diedyoung, and also to place a tablet commemorating him on the building. These funds were put towardbuilding the Clarke Divinity Hall (called the Byron Stone-Clarke Memorial Hall at the time ofcompletion). The name Byron Stone-Clarke is engraved on the fanlight above the entrance to thebuilding.When the current Divinity Hall was constructed in 1963, it was renamed the Clarke Memorial Hall.Following the occurrence of the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, a renovation project was implementedfrom 2003 to 2007. It is currently used for lectures as well as a place for the education of Christianprinciples.TheClarkeChapelinsidethebuildingisalsousedforweddingceremonies.*Niijima Jo, the founder of Doshisha, used his English name, Joseph H.Neesima, in the U.S.A.
