ハリス理化学館Harris Science Hall? Completed in July 1890? Designated as a National Important CulturalProperty on May 21, 1979A two-story, brick, pantile-roofed buildingTotal Building Area: 587m 2Designed by: A.N. HansellConstructed by: Sahei KojimaThe Harris Science Hall was built with a $100,000 donation from J.N. Harris through theAmerican Board with the aim of establishing an institution providing a higher level of scienceeducation. There is a story that the catafalque used for the coffin of Joseph Neesima*, who died justbefore the completion of the hall, was subsequently used to make the staircase rail of this building. There was an octagon-shaped observatory in the center of the rooftop. This was removed in 1893,though the stairs leading to the observatory remain. After World War II, the Harris Science Hall wasprincipally used by the Faculty of Engineering (now the Faculty of Science and Engineering). Since1994, when the Faculty of Engineering was integrated and transferred to the Tanabe Campus (nowthe Kyotanabe Campus), it has been used mainly as office space.Today the Harris Science Hall houses Harris Science Hall Doshisha Gallery. On the day of Harris Science School’s opening ceremony? 3 ?
