新島旧邸Neesima’s Residence? Completed in September 1878? Designated as a Kyoto City Designated TangibleCultural Property on June 1, 1985A two-story (partly one-story), wooden, pantile-roofedbuildingTotal Building Area: 217.4m 2In the early Taisho eraJoseph Neesima rented a house at Shin-Karasuma Kashira-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City beforeNeesima’s Residence was built, which he not only lived in but also used as a church, calledSaikyo Daini Kokai (today known as Doshisha Church). J.M. Sears, after learning this, donated£400 to help build Neesima a private house and a meeting house (chapel). Neesima obtained thesite where Doshisha Academy was first established (transferred to the Imadegawa Campus in 1876),and built Neesima’s Residence. The house has American colonial influences on the outside, though some traditional Japaneseelements can be found within. Neesima’s Residence is considered by many as a fine example of apiece of architecture where East and West harmoniously coexist. It is said that much of the designwas the idea of W. Tailor, a teacher at Doshisha Academy at that time, while town carpentersworked on its actual construction.? 13 ?
