Vories Architectural FirmConstructed by: ShimizugumiJust after the opening of the reading roomKeimeikan (Doshisha’s second library) served as the‘heart of the university’until theconstruction of Imadegawa Library (the third library) in 1973. Keimeikan was a symbol ofthe 1920 inauguration of Doshisha University, which made it a fully-fledged university approvedunder the new system of the University Ordinance.The book storeroom building was constructed with a donation from the alumni and others, andoriginally housed an office, a reading room, a research room and an assembly room until the mainlibrary building was completed on the south side. The main library building was constructed with adonation of over \80,000 by one of the graduates, Tadazaburo Yamamoto.The reading room on the second floor of the main library building was originally an open ceilingspace with high windows through which natural light entered, but was renovated in 1952, formingtwo levels. Looking out of the high windows on the south side, it is possible to see how it has beenextended. An extension to the book storeroom building was constructed on the east side in 1957. In1973, when the third library (now the Doshisha University Library building) was built constructed,its role as library was ended.? 9 ?
